About us

The story behind the 20 Emblem Designers is definitely fascinating! Experience how 20 strangers from across South Africa came together to bring a new era to life.

In 2006, the Parliament Of The Republic Of South Africa, invited all South Africans to design a new Parliamentary Emblem.

Participants needed to consider:

  • Multiculturalism
  • Unity
  • Democracy
  • New beginnings
  • Stature and dignity of the institution
  • Historical continuity

Parliament received over 2,000 entries, out of which 20 designs were shortlisted. The 20 chosen designers attended a 3-day design workshop in Cape Town with the aim of creating a new emblem.

New SA Parliamentary Emblem

Why was the emblem changed?

The emblem of the time, which dated back to 1910, represented the Westminster tradition that South Africa adopted from the coat of arms of Britain. It included the old South African coat of arms and the four colonies.
